This Privacy Policy explains how The Daily Oracle ("we", "our", or "us"), a product of The Pattern. Unpacked., collects, uses, shares, and protects your information when you use the The Daily Oracle mobile app, our website, and related services (together, the "Services").
We are the data controller for the personal information described here. By using the Services, you agree to this Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services.
Contents
When you create an account we collect the email address you sign in with and any display name you provide. Authentication and your account record are managed through our backend provider, Supabase.
If you start a free trial or subscribe in the web app, your payment is processed by Stripe. If you subscribe through the Apple App Store or Google Play, your purchase is processed by that store and managed through RevenueCat. In each case we receive your subscription/entitlement status (for example, whether you are on a trial or an active paid plan) and related transaction identifiers. We do not receive or store your full card or bank details — those are handled by Stripe, Apple, Google, and their payment processors. Website purchases (such as e-books) are also processed by Stripe; we do not store full card numbers.
You may voluntarily provide content within the app, including:
This content is stored against your account so you can return to it. You are responsible for the content you choose to submit.
We collect basic technical data needed to run the Services, such as device type, operating system, app version, and a push notification token (see Section 4). On the website we may collect IP address, browser type, referral source, and pages viewed.
We collect information about how you interact with the Services — features used and general activity patterns — to operate and improve the app.
We use your information only to provide and improve the Services, specifically to:
We may use anonymised or aggregated data (which does not identify you) for analytics and product development. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
Ask Odessa provides educational information, psychoeducation, and reflection. When you send a message — or upload a screenshot or message — that content is sent to our AI provider, Anthropic (the makers of Claude), to generate a response. Odessa's replies are AI-generated.
Your messages are used to generate your response and are not used to train AI models. Anthropic does not use content submitted through its commercial API to train its models. Your conversations are private to your account and are not routinely reviewed by people; a small number of authorised team members may access data only when genuinely needed (for example, to provide support, to keep the Services safe, or where required by law).
AI tools are for education and reflection only and are not therapy, legal advice, medical advice, crisis intervention, diagnosis, or professional risk assessment. Please avoid submitting highly sensitive information where you can.
If you enable notifications, we register a push token through Expo's push service so we can send your daily message. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings or in the app.
The app includes a Private Notifications setting (on by default) that uses neutral wording on your lock screen so the nature of the app is not revealed. You can change this in Profile → Privacy.
The Daily Oracle (one daily message) is free. Optional subscriptions unlock the 52-Week Journey and Ask Odessa. Subscriptions purchased in the web app are billed by us through Stripe; subscriptions purchased through the Apple App Store or Google Play are billed by that store (managed via RevenueCat). See our Terms & Conditions for billing, renewal, cancellation, and refund details.
We share data only with service providers that help us run the Services, under contract and consistent with this Policy:
Each provider processes data under its own privacy policy. We do not currently use third-party advertising networks. If we add an analytics provider, we will update this Policy and this list.
Your data is protected with industry-standard measures, including encryption in transit and access controls that restrict your data to your own account. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Our providers may store and process data on servers located outside your country (including in the United States). Where personal information is transferred internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses) as required by applicable law.
We keep your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Services. When you delete your account, your associated data is removed from our systems (our providers may retain limited backups for a short period under their own policies). We may retain certain information where required to comply with legal obligations or resolve disputes.
You can access and edit your content in the app, manage notifications in your device or app settings, and manage your subscription in your store account. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to:
To exercise any of these rights, contact hello@thedailyoracle.org. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.
You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time, directly in the app: Profile → Account → "Delete my account." This is immediate and cannot be undone. You can also request deletion by email. See our dedicated Account Deletion page for full instructions.
We process your personal data on the following legal bases: performance of a contract (to provide the Services you request), legitimate interests (to operate, secure, and improve the Services), consent (for example, push notifications), and legal obligation. You have the rights listed in Section 9 and the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. Our EU/UK representative and Data Protection contact is hello@thedailyoracle.org.
We handle personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). You may request access to or correction of your information, and may complain to us at hello@thedailyoracle.org. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
We handle personal information consistent with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). We collect, use, and disclose personal information only for the purposes described in this Policy and with your consent, and you may access or correct your information by contacting us.
We do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising. California residents may request to know, delete, or correct their personal information, and will not be discriminated against for exercising these rights. To make a request, contact hello@thedailyoracle.org.
On our website we may use cookies and similar technologies to measure traffic, understand usage, and improve performance. You can disable cookies in your browser settings. The mobile app does not use advertising cookies.
The Services are intended for adults and are not directed to children under 18 (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version here with a revised "Last updated" date and, for material changes, provide notice in the app.
